Symbolism

The dachshund carries symbolic meaning rooted in its history as a fearless hunting dog and its modern reputation as a spirited companion. These three qualities define its most enduring symbolic associations.

  • Fearlessness despite size Bred to hunt badgers in underground dens, dachshunds were selected for bravery far exceeding their physical stature. This courage symbolizes the strength that comes from determination rather than size—a reminder that resolve and spirit often matter more than outward power.

  • Self-assured decision making Originally bred to work alone underground, dachshunds developed strong independent judgment. This symbolizes confident autonomy—the ability to think for oneself and trust one's instincts. It reflects self-reliance balanced with connection to others.

  • Joy as a serious pursuit Despite their hunting origins, dachshunds are renowned for their spirited, sometimes comical personalities. This playfulness symbolizes the importance of approaching life with levity and humor—finding delight even in everyday moments and refusing to take oneself too seriously.

Fauna

  • The dachshund originated in Germany over 600 years ago, with its name literally meaning "badger dog." Bred specifically to hunt badgers, rabbits, and other burrow-dwelling animals, their elongated bodies and short legs allowed them to pursue prey into underground tunnels. By the 1800s, dachshunds had split into different sizes—standard for badgers, miniature for rabbits—and their popularity spread beyond hunting circles. They became beloved companions across Europe and eventually worldwide, recognized for their bold personalities and distinctive appearance.

  • Common Name: Dachshund (also known as wiener dog, sausage dog)
    Scientific Name: Canis lupus familiaris
Height: 20–23 cm (8–9 in) at the shoulder (standard); 13–18 cm (5–7 in) (miniature)
Length: Body length typically 2–3 times the height
Weight: 7–15 kg (16–32 lbs) standard; under 5 kg (11 lbs) miniature
    Lifespan: 12–16 years
Coat Types: Smooth (short), longhaired, or wirehaired
Color Variations: Red, black and tan, chocolate, cream, dapple, brindle
Distinctive Feature: Elongated body with short legs, long muzzle, paddle-shaped paws for digging

  • Dachshunds are bold, clever, and remarkably stubborn. They form strong bonds with their families while maintaining an independent streak that reflects their hunting heritage. Known for being vocal watchdogs, they alert readily to activity. Their confidence often manifests as fearlessness around much larger dogs. While affectionate and playful, they can be single-minded when pursuing a scent or goal, making consistent training important from an early age.

Collection

  • The Flora Fauna Collection began in 2007 with a series focused on birds and has continued to expand ever since. Conceived as an ongoing visual study rather than a closed series, the collection explores the essential forms, patterns, and identities of plants and animals from around the world.

  • Since its inception, the collection has been featured in print and online publications, including British Vanity Fair (holiday gift guide) and IDN Magazine, along with coverage from Dwell, Apartment Therapy, Design Milk, Grain Edit, Print Magazine, People of Print, OMG Posters, and Complex. These features highlighted both the artwork and the broader philosophy behind the collection.

  • Designed with modularity in mind, the Flora Fauna prints work especially well in small formats such as 5×7 and 8×10. They are intended to be grouped and expanded over time, allowing collectors to build personal compositions that grow organically. This makes them ideal for smaller spaces or for adding a refined, thoughtful accent to a wall without overwhelming it.
