The Bernese Mountain Dog descends from mastiff-type dogs brought to Switzerland by Roman legions over 2,000 years ago. In the farmlands surrounding Bern, these dogs were refined into versatile working animals—pulling carts to market, guarding homesteads, and driving cattle. By the late 1800s, industrialization nearly drove the breed to extinction, but Swiss breeders revived it through careful preservation. Today, the Bernese is cherished worldwide as both a working dog and devoted companion.

While initially reserved with strangers, they're typically non-aggressive watchdogs. Their working heritage means they respond well to purposeful tasks and structured routine.
