Symbolism

The Bernese Mountain Dog carries symbolic meaning rooted in its alpine origins as a working farm dog and its modern role as a devoted family companion. These three qualities define its most enduring symbolic associations.

  • Grounded resilience and capability
Bred to pull carts and guard farms in the Swiss Alps, the Bernese embodies functional strength—not aggressive force, but capable endurance. This represents the kind of quiet power that supports and sustains, a reminder that true strength often shows itself through reliability rather than display.

  • Deep loyalty that asks nothing in return
Bernese Mountain Dogs form profound bonds with their families, often described as "velcro dogs" for their attachment. This devotion symbolizes unconditional loyalty—the kind of steadfast presence that shows up regardless of circumstance. It reflects partnership built on trust and emotional depth.

  • Calm awareness in any situation
Despite their size and strength, Bernese are known for their gentle, measured temperament. This composure symbolizes emotional steadiness—the ability to remain centered and thoughtful rather than reactive. It speaks to the value of patience and deliberate presence.

Fauna

  • The Bernese Mountain Dog descends from mastiff-type dogs brought to Switzerland by Roman legions over 2,000 years ago. In the farmlands surrounding Bern, these dogs were refined into versatile working animals—pulling carts to market, guarding homesteads, and driving cattle. By the late 1800s, industrialization nearly drove the breed to extinction, but Swiss breeders revived it through careful preservation. Today, the Bernese is cherished worldwide as both a working dog and devoted companion.

  • Common Name: Bernese Mountain Dog
    Scientific Name: Canis lupus familiaris
Height: 58–70 cm (23–28 in) at the shoulder
    Weight: 32–52 kg (70–115 lbs)
    Lifespan: 7–10 years
Coat: Long, thick, slightly wavy; requires regular grooming
Color Pattern: Distinctive tricolor—black base with white chest marking and rust accents above eyes, on cheeks, legs, and chest
Build: Large, sturdy, well-muscled draft dog.

  • Bernese Mountain Dogs are affectionate, calm, and deeply loyal to their families. They thrive on companionship and moderate activity, with a gentle disposition that makes them excellent with children. While initially reserved with strangers, they're typically non-aggressive watchdogs. Their working heritage means they respond well to purposeful tasks and structured routine. These dogs do best in cooler climates due to their thick coats.

Collection

  • The Flora Fauna Collection began in 2007 with a series focused on birds and has continued to expand ever since. Conceived as an ongoing visual study rather than a closed series, the collection explores the essential forms, patterns, and identities of plants and animals from around the world.

  • Since its inception, the collection has been featured in print and online publications, including British Vanity Fair (holiday gift guide) and IDN Magazine, along with coverage from Dwell, Apartment Therapy, Design Milk, Grain Edit, Print Magazine, People of Print, OMG Posters, and Complex. These features highlighted both the artwork and the broader philosophy behind the collection.

  • Designed with modularity in mind, the Flora Fauna prints work especially well in small formats such as 5×7 and 8×10. They are intended to be grouped and expanded over time, allowing collectors to build personal compositions that grow organically. This makes them ideal for smaller spaces or for adding a refined, thoughtful accent to a wall without overwhelming it.
